PARENTAL GUIDANCE SUGGESTED
with respect to these images

"Such are the two ways of the Photograph. The choice is mine: to subject its spectacle to the civilized code of perfect illusions, or to confront in it the wakening of intractable reality." -Roland Barthes

THOMAS #1
Miami, Florida 1997
Hasselblad 503CW, Planar 80/2.8
RETURN TO THUMBNAIL GALLERY

Thomas Dewitt is sixty four. He lives alone in a tiny room at the rundown Charles Hotel on Collins Ave. in South Miami Beach. His most treasured memories are of surfing in Hawaii. Maybe they really happened.

MALIA #1, SOLICIT
South Florida, 1997
Hasselblad 503CW, Planar 80/2.8
RETURN TO THUMBNAIL GALLERY

Malia is trying to make it alone. She hasn't seen her parents since she was twelve; nor does she know of their wherebouts. Malia is a prostitute and seems not to know of, or believe in any other way to survive. She barely makes rent. Just the other night Malia was left stranded in the boondocks without money and with a two hour walk back to her motel room. Some days she gets a gun "shoved in her face" by some jerk who is not going to pay. She'd like to work for a call service but can't make it that way. Malia has a good heart.

MALIA #2
South Florida, 1997
Hasselblad 503CW, Planar 80/2.8
RETURN TO THUMBNAIL GALLERY

It is a privilege and honor to provide Malia with a few hours of employment as a real model in place of what she normally does. Within her limitations and without training she did very well. Later I ask why she turned in her left pinky? Because, she replied, "my nail was broken."

SHIRLEY
South Florida, 1997
Hasselblad 503CW, Sonnar 250/5.6
RETURN TO THUMBNAIL GALLERY

Shirley is my next door neighbor and was gracious enough to sit for this portrait.

LaTasha
Miami Fl, 1997
Nikon F4S, Nikkor 50/1.8
RETURN TO THUMBNAIL GALLERY

LaTasha hails from Tennessee where she left her children with her parents. She believes they will fare better than her because "they go to school." LaTasha was shot in a disco. The bullet entered her back, just missing the spine and exited below the right breast. The surgical scar runs from the navel down... She has many scars on her hands and arms from fights. When I compare "LaTasha" to "TRIANGLE" on the next page the discrepancy just blows away my mind. And it is nobody's fault; just something about the cards we are dealt.
